Terezín, the first modern-day fortress, was founded in the year 1780 by the then monarch, Emperor Joseph II of the Habsburg dynasty. Named after the Emperor's mother, Empress Maria Theresa of Austria. The housing estate, based on a chessboard ground plan, is formed by an array of Empire and neo-Classical residential, military and service buildings, which are all remarkable architectural monuments.
